Anyone for Phishing
Rob Lucas, newest member of our Corporate and Technology Team, reminds why we should keep our financial information secure.
Rather than inviting you for a day by a river, lake or pond, phishing is the fast growing criminal practice of sending e-mails mimicking those of handlers of financial information. A typical e-mail will purport to be sent by a bank or a business reporting that there is a problem with an account. The victim will them be invited to send security and financial information so that the problem can be fixed. Alternatively the victim will be invited to access a website created to look like the bank or business concerned and asked to input their details.
The fraudster will then use the information provided to fix the problem of there being any money in the real account operated by the victim. The details may also be used to commit identity theft and any number of frauds.
